Behind the door marked "Employees Only," down the stairs, past a bouncer and hostess and through the bowels of the kitchen lies La Esquina, arguably the be all end all of Mexican Food in NYC. Clusters of fashionistas, musicians & socials augment the mysterious allure. Why is this place sooo cool? Probably due in part to the fact that its owned by Serge Becker, the designer and nightlife entrepreneur behind such hipster loci as Bowery Bar, MK, and Area. Thankfully, the food is just as refreshing and delicious as the decor and the atmosphere. Every course pleases, from authentically styled tuna tacos to the soothing and tangy avocado and tomatillo soup ceviches, tostadas, salads and main courses, including chipotle-glazed shrimp, spit-roasted chicken and steamed mussels, chorizo quesadilla, chiles rellenos, pulled-pork taquito and grilled whole red snapper. Now if you have trouble getting past the "red ropes" so to speak head over to the taqueria for some chicken and steak tacos, or next door to the cafe where The menus are slightly different. Here, make sure to try sides of grilled corn and of "gratin de rajas," combining roasted poblano peppers with Yukon gold potatoes and Manchego and Cotija cheeses. It was terrific, and so was the sandwich of roasted chicken, avocado and chipotle mayonnaise, which is all available in the cafe but not below.
